Almost in a dream, Aron felt himself being picked up and held in a stranger’s arms. He strained to see the face, finally recognizing the Tarylan he had seen earlier. “You killed him?” he whispered hoarsely.

Gerro nodded. “It was not right for an honorable warrior to die that way. You were stopped by treachery.”

Aron beckoned Gerro to come closer. The Defender’s eye lids fluttered as he fought to stay conscious. “Tell Thella . . .” He paused, fighting to say the words. Gerro leaned close to hear what the last Defender of Verde said with his final breath.

Hearing screams of anguish, Gerro looked up as Aron’s family members and friends rushed over. He delicately handed the body to them and stepped away, feeling confused and sorrowful. One of the mourners cautiously approached Gerro. The older man’s reddened eyes were filled with tears. He tried to speak but could only managed soft sobs. Gerro stood respectfully still, his head bowed.

“I am Witt. I was his circle steward," the other man finally managed to say, nodding to where Aron lay. “He spoke to you, what did . . .” Both men paused realizing they had met before when a Sankari was killed in the marketplace.

Gerro eyed the old man for another moment then continued. “He had a message for someone named Thella. Is she here?”

Witt looked surprised. “She is his aunt,” he said, pointing to a tiny white-haired woman who was making her way to where the mourners had gathered. She moved quickly for someone of her advanced years. Two middle-aged men, who looked to be her sons, walked alongside her.

“Oh my dear boy,” Thella said, shaking her head and wiping away tears when she reached the body. With help from her sons, she knelt to kiss Aron’s cheek.

Witt made his way to Thella to tell her of the message. After being helped to her feet, she gestured for Gerro to approach. “Aron said something to you? A Tarylan?” Thella asked bluntly.

In spite of himself, Gerro smiled at her candor, nodding. He bent down so the old woman could hear. “The Defender said to tell Thella that Tevan is avenged.” She nodded as her crystal blue eyes watered. Her sons sobbed. Witt turned away, tears dripped down his cheeks.

Reaching up, Thella pulled Gerro close, kissing him on the forehead. “Now both my dear boys are at peace. Thank you,” she said and walked back to comfort the other mourners.

“Traitor!” A high-pitched scream snapped Gerro around. The Tarylan captain looked up to see a furious High Seer gesturing for him to join her. Her face was red with fury and contorted in a grimace. All the Seers stood frowning at him. Gerro crossed his arms and glared back at Tanella. Shaking his head, he turned his back on the woman who had controlled his life. “Guards, seize that traitor and bring him to the fortress!” Tanella shouted.

Gerro readied himself for a fight as twenty Tarylans leaped over the arena’s walls. They ran to
